Craniosacral Therapy

What is Craniosacral Therapy (CST)?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle form of bodywork that focuses on the hydraulic system surrounding the brain and spinal cord, known as the craniosacral system. This system includes the membranes and fluid that protect the brain and spinal cord, as well as the bones of the skull, face, and mouth.

When we experience physical or emotional trauma, scars, adhesions, or birth-related challenges, our bodies develop compensations that can disrupt this system. These disruptions may affect essential functions such as movement, sensory processing, and emotional regulation.

CST works by addressing these imbalances and restrictions, helping the nervous system and body return to a state of balance and optimal functioning.

How Can Craniosacral Therapy Help Me?

CST facilitates the body’s natural ability to heal itself by gently releasing restrictions in the fascia, muscles, bones, and membranes involved in the craniosacral system. From birth onward, our bodies encounter physical and emotional stresses that create tension and compensations, which can worsen over time.

By releasing these adhesions and imbalances, CST supports the body’s self-correcting processes, promoting improved movement, reduced pain, and better overall well-being.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Sessions typically last between 1 to 2 hours. While some clients feel relief after just one session, noticeable changes usually emerge after 3 to 5 sessions.

The most effective plan often involves weekly sessions for three weeks, followed by a gradual reduction in frequency. The first session generally addresses the whole body, the second focuses on cranial bones and fascia around the head, neck, and shoulders, and subsequent visits target areas needing ongoing care.

I Didn’t Feel Much—Why?

The fascia—the connective tissue throughout the body—is delicate and highly responsive. Craniosacral therapists use very light touch—often less than 5 grams of pressure—to avoid causing the fascia to recoil or tense up.

This gentle touch allows therapists to “meld” with the body’s subtle rhythms and identify restrictions. Applying too much pressure can disrupt this delicate process, so the lightness of the technique is intentional and necessary for CST to work effectively.
